Every man must decide whether he will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness. Martin Luther King Jr.

The basis of altruism is to return the good fortune of opportunities to the society in which we live. The desire to help others reach a level of relative happiness is an innate human trait of character. There’s a deep sense of reward for contributions of time, effort or money to charities. The best way to choose and support a charity that represents your outlook is to define your own personal incentives to help others.

Novel Ways to Become a Volunteer
It doesn’t take great wealth to become a volunteer for a  charity or cause. It only takes ingenuity and creativity. Even when regular duties are time consuming, it’s still possible to become a volunteer on a low-key level. The biggest effort is choosing a charity that represents your outlook. There are many novel ways to become involved with the charity that is closest to your personal principles and interest.

  • Seek an established charity that welcomes support and volunteers
  • Look for a social group with like-minded outlook
  • Create a core group of friends or relatives with a single charitable focus
  • Choose a local, national or international group with a local chapter

Contributions of Time and Effort

Although time may be limited, many find they can support a charity by making donations of effort. Contribute to local food banks by contacting food suppliers and grocers to request donations of goods. Local theaters and playhouses are another way to help organize a charitable event. Performance or movie proceeds can be dedicated to support a charity of your choice. Some parks departments will also donate picnic areas for a daylong charity picnic event. Contact a local car wash and local elementary and high schools to ask for help from students. This will organize a charity effort with energetic assistance from the young.

Research and Develop a Relationship with an Organization
Develop a relationship with an organization based on your personal belief system. These organizations can be philanthropic, charitable or civic. Study each organization before contacting them to offer your time and effort or financial donations.
